Went to Restaurant Taquet in the Wayne Hotel this past Valentine's Day and had a wonderful 5-course French meal for $60/person. Adding wine and tip, we spent about $90/person--a bit pricier than many restaurants. But everything was just perfect. I hear they have a cheaper lunch menu, and dining outside on the beautiful front porch looks like fun. Try to make reservations well in advance...also check out their really nice bar. Had dinner on 8/13/98 at Taquet and ordered the menu degustation for $60. The food overall was great although I expected something more imaginative than melon with prosciutto for the first course (the Parma ham though was the best I have ever tasted lacking all sinew). The rest of the meal did not disappoint and was in fact quite delicious - diver scallop with organic tomatoes and beet jus; fricassee of snails, foie gras and shitake; pan fried cod with fennel reduction; a beautiful presentaton of breast of duck with couscous and an onion confit; and a frisee and goat cheese salad. The dessert was a sampler of at least four desserts (three of which were chocolate) and fresh fruit. Service overall was good with the exception of one of our four waiters who was not quite up to par. Worth visiting again! [PEB, 8/15/98]
